What is the portfolio tool

Portfolios allow users to collect and organise files into custom Web pages. These files can be any binary file, images, videos, documents. These Portfolios can then be presented to individuals and groups of users, both within the University and beyond. Portfolios can remain live when a student leaves the University.

4 Portfolio Tool

Portfolio Tool

The tool offers e-portfolio functionality as part of the Blackboard 9.1 suite of tools Portfolios do not need to be attached to a module and can exist at a global level and across academic years. Students can collect artefacts in their Blackboard area without you making the tool available. Portfolios can be shared with those internal to the University and those outside. Passes can be enabled to allow portfolios to be visible for set periods of times. Portfolios can be private or public and can also be password protected.

5 Using the Portfolio Tool

Using the Portfolio Tool

Students can start using the Portfolio tool at any time, without you needing to do anything. It is available as soon as they login to Blackboard via the Content Collection Tab. If you wish to make use of the tool in a formal way, you can add it to a Blackboard area.

* This distinction is quite important, so please ensure it is understood before we progress.

6 Content Collection

Content Collection

The simplest way to use the portfolio tool is via the content collection tab in Blackboard.

7 Within a Blackboard area

Within a Blackboard area

The portfolio tool can also be embedded in a module or course area in Blackboard by using the Portfolios Homepage tool in Blackboard. There are two tools with similar names, Portfolio and Portfolio Homepage. Portfolios lists shared portfolios in a module, whilst Portfolios Homepage allows students to organise their portfolios.

8 Artefacts

Artefacts

Portfolios are used to organise and display artefacts. It is always a good idea to encourage students to collect artefacts as soon as they start generating content. Artefacts are personal until they are organised and displayed in a portfolio.

9 Creating a portfolio

Creating a portfolio

Blackboard provides a choice of two wizard based system for creating portfolios: Create Personal Portfolio Create Basic Portfolio

The Basic Portfolio wizard provides a stripped down portfolio creation tool, whilst the full personal portfolio provides more customisation and design options.

10 Commenting

Commenting

Comments can be enabled for portfolios. This allows portfolio artefacts to be reviewed by those who have access to the portfolio. Comments can be public or private. It is also possible to enable public comments until the portfolio is shared with external users, then revert to private.

11 Sharing

Sharing

Portfolios can be shared with individual users, everyone in a module, or external users. Different levels of sharing can be implemented to suit the application. Example: A student portfolio could be shared with an academic member of staff during artefact collection. Academic staff could comment and work in collaboration with the student to complete the artefacts to a satisfactory level. Once complete, the portfolio could be shared with a potential employer.

12 Portfolio to Go

Portfolio to Go

Portfolio to go is a function which allows a user to export a portfolio as a zip file. This allows a portfolio to be downloaded at any point, for off system backups, or for display on a personal website.
