Email Distribution List! It is VERY important that I have your email address!!! I will construct an email distribution list & use it to make important class announcements!!! PLEASE tell me if you change your email address!)

7 Math Pre-Requisite

Math Pre-Requisite

Math is the Language of Physics!! But, this is NOT a math course!! I simply will not have time to teach math to you! I must assume that you know it! Primary difficulties with the course are often math-related!! Math 1452: Calculus II with Applications Or an equivalent course somewhere else! Assumed Math Pre-Requisites: Math 1451: Calculus I Math 1320 & 1321: Algebra & Trigonometry Or: Math 1550: Pre-Calculus, Or equivalent courses elsewhere. Take advantage of the: Math Review in Appendix A!

8 Physics Pre-Requisite

Physics Pre-Requisite

Physics 1408, Principles of Physics I Or an equivalent calculus-based Physics course elsewhere. I will not have time to teach you Physics I! I must assume that you know it! Some difficulties with the course are often related to a poor knowledge of Physics I concepts!!

9 Physics 2401 Laboratory

Physics 2401 Laboratory

This no-credit lab is a required co-requisite! IF you drop the lecture you MUST drop the lab also! ATTENTION! LAB SCHEDULE LABS STARTED TODAY MONDAY, AUGUST 25! NOTE: COME to lab prepared to start, including already having your lab manual!!!

10 Physics 2401 Recitation

Physics 2401 Recitation

This no-credit recitation is a required co-requisite! IF you drop the lecture you MUST drop the recitation also! ATTENTION! RECITATION SCHEDULE RECITATIONS ALSO STARTED TODAY!!

11 Where to Go for Help

Where to Go for Help

See the syllabus, which covers this! See Me!!! Room 18. During office hours or not (I’m usually not rigid about these). Or call me on the phone. Or email me! I respond to email!!! See your Lab or Recitation TAs!!! There will be office hours for these people. Get a tutor!!! The Physics Department Office (Science Room 101) has an approved list.

12 Where to Go for Help

Where to Go for Help

Your Fellow Students!!! A very effective strategy is to work on homework and to study for quizzes & exams together in a group. This is how professionals work in the “real world”. Supplemental Instruction Sessions!! Supplemental Instruction (SI) Sessions may be arranged. The Internet!!! There are HUGE numbers of Physics Help Web sites! Using Google & typing in “Physics Help” gives about 34,000 hits!!!! I encourage you to try out some. Class Website!

13 Bottom Line on Help

Bottom Line on Help

IF YOU NEED HELP, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MANY HELP RESOURCES AVAILABLE!! If you need help & don’t use these resources, only YOU are to blame!

14 To Succeed in this Course

To Succeed in this Course

READ the book, which cost you many $$$! It’s most effective to read the material BEFORE I lecture over it. WORK the assigned homework problems!! Before looking at the solutions. Copying the solutions will NOT teach you physics. WORK extra problems!

15 To Succeed in this Course

To Succeed in this Course

COME TO CLASS!! There is a correlation between attendance & grade! Also, skipping means that you are WASTING the tuition & fees that you (or someone) paid! With tuition & fees for a full-time student, each class meeting costs about $23. Each time you skip, you are throwing away about $23!! After a while this adds up! My lectures may not be entertaining or brilliant, but I do expose you to the material. ATTENDANCE!!! THE WEEKEND DOESN’T BEGIN ON THURSDAY (or end on Monday)!!!! FRIDAY IS A REGULAR CLASS DAY (as is Monday)!!!

16 On-Line Homework

On-Line Homework

Commercial Website WebAssign On-line homework will be assigned & graded at the WebAssign site. Doing homework is the most effective means of learning physics, which is impossible without working problems! Once you are registered at WebAssign, you’ll be able to get assignments & submit homework. I’ll ATTEMPT to post assignments at the beginning of each chapter. They will be due at 11:30pm about 5 days later. You’ll be able to get answers after the due date.

17 WebAssign To access WebAssign, login at https://www

WebAssign To access WebAssign, login at https://www

WebAssign.net/. I’ve passed out instructions about how to do this. If you don’t have the Student Access Kit which comes with a new book, you can purchase one on the WebAssign site Please do this ASAP! NOTE: This site is not at TTU & you should give yourself plenty of time before the deadline for submitting answers–sometimes the network can be slow or down.
